Tarun Sardesai talks to the students at TSG about one practice in life that he was made to do as a child/student in boarding school, that holds him in good stead even today.
“This is one of the most important life lessons you will learn in my opinion. I’ve always believed that discipline depends on how well you achieve the first task of the day, and that is making your bed. It’s the way I’ve lived for many, many years, and I want to share this with you.”

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. And if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made, that you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.
“Most of you guys, when you wake up in the morning, this is what your bed looks like – messy, well slept in. And maybe you’re in a hurry, maybe you haven’t woken up early enough. And all you guys do is straighten out the quilts, right? And you feel this is the right way to make a bed. But it’s not. What I would like you to do is strip the bed down completely. Start by dusting the sheet. You want a clean sheet when you come back in the evening, don’t you? Place it on the bed. Make sure you measure it out so that you have enough slack on both sides because you will need to tuck it in. Always start with the lead side at the head. Tuck that side in first. The main goal here is not to have too many creases on your bed. Pull the creases out as much as possible, tighten the sheet up, then tuck it in. Once you’re satisfied, then you can do the sides. Put your pillow down neatly. Now we’re going to put the quilt on the bed again. Measure it out. No hurry, take your time. You can tuck the slack in at the end, and that should get you ready for the rest of the day.”
